Simon

Gagnon
Software Developer

Who are you, and what do you do? What do you like to do outside of work?

My name is Simon, and I'm from Montreal, Canada. I consider myself a polymath for everything related to startups. I love the craft of designing and building software. What I care about the most is getting clarity and sharing it with others. It could be by designing a good user experience, making a good developer experience for our team, or writing a requirement for a new feature. I do a lot of technical work, but I see it all as tools. The real goal is the experiences.

Outside of work, I spend most of my time learning new things by reading. I keep myself active by doing CrossFit and yoga. I'm also a coffee and keyboard enthusiast.

What hardware do you use?

I built my own Computer-1 AMD machine running Omarchy, and I'm using it with a Samsung Odyssey Neo G9, though I'm starting to think smaller might be better for focus. Furthermore, I have a Xiaomi monitor light bar to keep eyestrain down.

This little PC handles all Simon's daily computing needs

My keyboard is the ZSA Voyager, and I use a Razer DeathAdder v2 mouse. Audio setup is Yamaha HS4 speakers, and for meetings I use a JLab Talk Pro mic with my good old Sony WH-1000XM3s. I keep Roller and Scroller fidget toys nearby for when I'm thinking, and a CO2 monitor because air quality matters more than people realize.

And then there's my coffee setup, which is basically a micro café: AeroPress, Hario V60 Switch, Cafelat Robot manual espresso machine, Comandante C40 grinder, and a Subminimal NanoFoamer for microfoam. Good coffee isn't optional.

The only thing missing from this setup is the coffee

And what software?

On my desktop it's Ghostty terminal with Neovim, OpenCode, and Lazygit configured for the stacking workflow. I use Zen Browser for web. Linear keeps my work projects organized, Figma is where I do design work, and Slack is for team coordination.

On my iPhone I'm constantly in Readwise processing highlights from articles and books, using BoldVoice to work on my English pronunciation (French is my first language), saving things to MyMind when inspiration hits, and finally asking Perplexity questions throughout the day. These change somewhat frequently because I like exploring new software.

What’s your keyboard setup like? Do you use a custom layout or custom keycaps?

My setup for my Voyager is pretty standard. I choose the Red Pro switch since I wanted something simple and familiar for this keyboard. I still own other keyboards that are heavily modded, but this one is just perfect as it is. The layout is a homerow-mod QWERTY with the chordal-hold feature that I made.

I’m really satisfied with the results based on multiple inspirations from other layouts from the Oryx community. I ended up with something simple yet powerful, optimized for Omarchy Linux.

What would be your dream setup?

I already have my dream setup, I'm deeply grateful to have an office like I wanted ever since I was a teenager. It still has things I want to gradually improve. I continue in the search for the perfect chair and I am looking at getting the Navigator as my main pointer device and having an MX Master mouse for Figma work. Other upgrades will come out, but so far I'm pretty satisfied of the setup, probably better than I could even dream before.
