Zach Hill

Support Engineer @ Atlassian.

Who are you, and what do you do?

I’m Zach! I am a Support Engineer at Atlassian who has worked on Hipchat, Stride, and Statuspage. You may have seen Aaron’s feature — we work together.

What hardware do you use?

At home I use a single Samsung 34” Ultra-wide for my monitor, that I brought up to the proper height with a monitor arm. I have a 24” Acer monitor that I used in portrait mode, but recently decided to downsize my desktop. Speaking of desk, I ordered my standing desk from Uplift. It’s probably the most solid standing desk I’ve ever used, and it didn’t totally destroy my bank account.

When having to use a cursor to get across the screen, I use a Magic Trackpad 2, but am trying to decide on a trackball to try like the Kensington Expert, or a CST Trackball. As far as other peripherals, I use a Blue Yeti microphone and Audio Technica ATH-M50x headphones.

Outside of that I use a Herman Miller Aeron chair both in the office and at home.

And what software?

Oh man, so much. Front is how our team communicates with our customers when they put in a support request for Statuspage. With it being Atlassian, I use Jira for issue tracking, and Confluence to track down internal documentation. I also routinely use Postman whenever testing any APIs, and would highly suggest it to anyone else who finds themselves frequently troubleshooting API calls.

What’s your keyboard setup like? Do you use a custom layout or custom keycaps?

It probably took me as long to find a tenting preference as it took me to find the first layout that lasted a full few days. Could it change again? Probably. But that’s the beauty of the EZ! I have a layout that is getting to a pretty good place, though I still usually find something I need to tweak. Then it just takes me a couple seconds to find a paperclip in my desk to make the necessary adjustment. I don’t have any custom keycaps yet but it’s definitely in the works. Right now I am thinking XDA or SA profile caps, but am still undecided. I wish I had joined the drop for more MiTo Canvas, but maybe I will get lucky with finding something on /r/mechmarket. For now the black sculpted caps are working great, but I will definitely be getting some custom keycaps whenever I find the right ones!

What would be your dream setup?

Definitely SA Penumbra with white alphas, then a custom cable between the halves to accent the mods, along with another cable to run to the computer. After that it would be nice to get a wooden rests, though the black ones I ordered with my EZ are still pretty great and will probably stick around a while. From there I think the only thing I could change is going back to dual monitors if a couple 4k’s caught my eye. Last, but not least, another EZ at work so that I don’t have to travel with the one I have now.
