Braulio Barahona
Frontend DeveloperWho are you, and what do you do? What do you like to do outside of work?
I’m Braulio, and I’m a frontend developer currently working with Angular 8-9. In my free time, I like to code, play video games, and go out roller skating. Ever since I’ve moved to Ireland I’ve been going hiking more and more, since the weather doesn’t allow skating as much as I’d like, and I can say that I’m really enjoying it. Some places here are beautiful and very close to the city.
What hardware do you use?
So in the office, I have two 24” monitors hooked to a MacBook Pro and an ergonomic vertical mouse. Now that I’m working from home, I use my 27” curved gaming monitor to work. When I’m not using the work Mac at home, I use the gaming PC: I7-9700K, 1TB M.2, 16GB DDR4, GeForce RTX 2060, Logitech G502 mouse, and a Corsair mechanical keyboard that I swap with the ErgoDox when I have to work. I will leave the ErgoDox permanently in the office once things go back to normal, as I don’t trust myself to play video games with it (yet). My ErgoDox is the one with no lights and blank keycaps, with the Cherry MX Browns to be more office-friendly.
Due to the fact that I could fit only a small desk in my room, I opted for a dual-monitor arm that would allow me to save space. For the Mac/laptop I bought this mount so I can use the dual-monitor arm. As you can see from the picture, I have a USB switch in order to change the peripherals between my PC and the Mac. Also, since I don’t really enjoy having cables everywhere, you can see this cable management system below the monitor.
And what software?
Well, for development I use VS Code. We use Microsoft Teams for chats and meetings and Outlook for emails at work. I’ve been working with TypeScript since 2017, and I must say I really enjoy it. Also, I’m always trying to learn new stuff, I was considering learning Vue next, and maybe even some Python.
What’s your keyboard setup like? Do you use a custom layout or custom keycaps?
I use a custom setup for the keyboard, since I’m used to having more keys. I have three “enter”s on the main layout and also have some keys with nothing assigned to them—yet—since I’m still figuring out what to put where, and they’re not in ideal places. I tried to group the custom layers keys in order to be used with one hand each. For example, in my coding layout I have all the signs and characters I need on the right hand, and I have a media layout with all the keys I need on the left. On the main layer, I positioned the keys I use the most in a position that felt more natural to me in order to avoid moving the hands out of position.
What would be your dream setup?
I think my dream setup will consist of what I have now plus a second identical monitor, but my home desk won’t allow it.
